BAGHDAD TRIP SUMMARY:
Monday 03-24-2008 3:46pm CT
I thought it would be fun to see how well you paid attention to the previous journal entries. So I will summarize our mission in abbreviated form. If you need help, please consult your nearest Military friend.

We began our mission with the help of the Chief PAO at III CORP. SRP’d with 1st BCT, entered into the MEDPROS, got our shots, then on our way. Went WHEELS UP at GRAY AAF on Friday, 7, March.  Arrived IN THEATRE late Saturday. CONVOYED to CAMP BUEHRING, our first AO, where we were constantly in search of TP. Spent 3 days there before heading NORTH to BIAP on a SPACE-A flight in a C-130, wearing our ACU’s and ACH’s and IOTV’s with DAPS and ESAPI.

Arrived IN COUNTRY to CAMP LIBERTY late Monday, were assigned a CHU on PAD18. Went to the CIC MND-B 4ID HQ, met the CG and his staff, including the G1  through the G9. We sat through a BUA, they asked us if we had any GFI’s..we didn’t. We did not have the opportunity to see a CUA. Would tell you more about the CIC, but can’t, due to OPSEC.

After a couple of days we CONVOYED with DCO STB in an MRAP equipped with DUKE and flanked by UAH’s… headed OUTSIDE THE WIRE to the IZ. There we visited the CPIC to get our ID’s. We arrived back from the IZ in our AO or OE without encountering any IED’s (THANK GOD) Nor have we encountered any IDF.

Back at LIBERTY, we broadcast our show for 9 days from the MOC with the MND-B 4ID 113th MPAD,  with visits from every rank and co: PVT, PV2, PFC, SPC, CPL, SGT, SSG, SFC, MSG, SGM, CSM, CWO, CW2, CW3, CW4, CW5, 1SG, 2LT, 1LT, CPT, MAJ, LTC, COL, BG, MG, and I know I missing many others. Most of the broadcast was done on a DNS line, while some was done on DVIDS.

We’ve also enjoyed many a good MESS in the DFAC..aside from being frisked almost daily by the Ugandan security forces…but we do appreciate the FORCE PROTECTION.

We also took an AERIAL RECON mission in a UH-60 over downtown Baghdad.

We are scheduled to leave BIAP Sunday, headed to ALI AL SALEM for an EML flight to DFW. We will have to participate in an unofficial Army process called HURRY UP AND WAIT (HUAW not HOOAH). Thanks to everyone associated with getting us over here and allowing us to broadcast with the soldiers. There are too many names to mention, but we appreciate you all.  Its’ been a great trip..one we’ll never forget…and can’t wait to get back to WACO for a cold BEER!

Camp Liberty – Baghdad Iraq. 11am Local- 3am Central Texas- FINAL ENTRY

Headed home. We have had a great time here at Camp Liberty. I can’t express enough how nice and accommodating everyone has been. We have had so many soldiers, from so many different walks of life, with so many different outlooks on the war and their job in fighting it. We had some laughs, and gave them the opportunity to say hi to a loved one back home. But along with those laughs, I still look in their eyes and think...I hope they stay safe. Each time they go outside the wire they risk their lives in this unpredictable place.

Last night (Friday) we were invited by GEN Hammond to attend a memorial service at FOB Falcon for a young soldier who had been killed in the streets of Baghdad, protecting a cache his group had stumbled upon. It was very sobering, and very patriotic…and very honorable. This young man was just a few days from his 20th birthday, taken so young…but his friends and fellow soldiers say he was a fighter...and would want them to go on with the fight. In fact, there have been about 14 young soldiers killed since we have been here, and everyone takes each loss of life very hard…it’s one of their own.

We will bring back many stories from here…ones that we haven’t told on this journal, so if you see us...ask about our experience. I think Zack and I both will take away a different view of the men and women who volunteer to fight, and die for their country and their freedoms and the freedoms of others. I have the greatest respect for them, and I wish each one of them a safe journey home.

I have a fun post to come after this one, dealing with the Army way of life with all the acronyms they use, and I will have one more report to post after we get home, so check back here. I think you will find it very interesting. Thank you to everyone who helped us get here, broadcast here, and leave here. So long for now from Camp Liberty, Baghdad, we will see you back in the states.

God Bless the USA!
Jim

Dinner with a Sheik.  We were invited by General Hammond to join him, along with members of his staff, to have dinner in the Command Center last night. His top invited guest was Sheik Mohan, a highly revered elder from the Rashadiyah area. (Wikipedia defines “Sheik” as: A word or honorific term in the Arabic language that literally means “elder”. It is commonly used to designate an elder of a tribe, a lord, a revered wise man, or an Islamic scholar.) Gen. Hammond told me the Sheik is a very strong ruler in his area and when he speaks, his wishes are carried out.

In attendance at the dinner, along with us (Zack and Jim) the Sheik and Gen. Hammond

BG Milano, LTC Pappal, BG Grimsley, LTC Batschelet, and COL Hort. Also, along with Sheik Mohan, was Sayed Ismeal..who my understanding is the Director General..or the guy who handles the utilities and the public works for the council in his area. (rough translation). The Sheik also brought his son Hedir, a business man who works in oil exporting, and his associate and bodyguard, Ali. There were also three translators, and the 4ID band played quietly in the background.

After introductions, hand shakes and greetings, we sat down and were served an Arabic tea called Chi. I was told that it is a traditional start to an Islamic meal. The General’s chef had prepared a meal with Cornish Hen, mashed potato, green beans and a roll. Peach cobbler was the final touch for dessert.

There was much conversation during dinner (through the translators..which will blow you mind if you ever experience it). The flavor if the conversation was all about communication, and building relationships and security. Gen. Hammond told the Sheik that today had been a good day, and that one of the most sought after insurgents in the area, someone who we have been seeking for sometime, and who has been responsible for many Iraqi and American deaths, had been caught just a few hours ago. The Sheik was pleased. He also thanked Gen Hammond for the hospitality and extended an invitation for everyone..including the General’s “Texas friends” (that would be Zack and Jim) to his house to experience Iraqi food and hospitality. The invitation was graciously accepted.

After dinner, Gen Hammond stood up to again thank the Sheik and his son, along with his associates, for coming. He pointed out the young men and women soldiers who had served us dinner, as volunteers who have joined the Army..knowing they were coming to Iraq…who would die serving their country for this mission. He asked for a round of applause...it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. He then presented the men wrapped gifts as a show of appreciation.

Zack and I agreed that it was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity, as most of this trip has been so far. This dinner and conversation shows a small sample of the cooperation between the Iraqi people and the U.S. Military..the give and take that goes on in the name of freedom and the rebuilding of this country.  It was an incredible scene to witness.

We have two more days of broadcasting here with our men and women soldiers from Camp Liberty. We are also planning to attend a memorial service on Friday night for a soldier who we lost earlier this week.
More to come from Baghdad………………………
